Separating Dyes in Water

You probably have seen Lava Lamps in stores. These lamps plug into the wall and can get rather warm. They contain materials that are unsafe to use at home. Here's a simple way to make a lava lamp using materials you can find in your kitchen.

Materials
A clear bottle
water
cooking oil
table salt
food coloring (optional)

Fill the water about two-thirds full of water. Add a drop or two of food coloring, if you want. Pour about an inch or two of oil on top of the water and let the oil settle on top of the water. Pour a stream of salt on top of the oil and watch your lamp go! Keep adding salt to keep the lamp moving.

Making Glue from Milk

Most people buy glue at the store to use when they need to stick things together. Store bought glue is convenient, but for fun, you can make your own glue from milk. It’s fun and it’s easy.
Just follow these steps.

Materials
Skim milk (do not use whole or 2% milk)
Vinegar
Coffee Filter Paper (cone type works best)
Paper Towels
Baking Soda

Procedure

Mix 1 cup of milk and ¼ cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes. The milk will separate and small pieces of a white solid will form. This white solid is some of the proteins in milk (casein) and will end up becoming the glue.

Place the coffee filter paper over a tall glass. Pour the milk/vinegar mixture into the filter. Pour a little bit at a time so the mixture doesn’t overflow the filter. Make sure the bottom of the filter is above the level of liquid in draining into the glass. Let the filter sit for 10-15 minutes so most of the liquid is removed.

Pour the solids into a clean bowl or plastic container. Add two teaspoons of baking soda to the solids and mix. Listen carefully—you will be able to hear the baking soda react with the extra vinegar and you may even see the some bubbles. Add about one teaspoon of water and mix. You’ve made glue. Now try it out on some paper!

Why does it work?

Milk is a suspension—solids are suspended in the liquid (not dissolved like in salt water). When you add vinegar (an acid), some of these suspended solids (the protein, casein) change their shape and can no longer be suspended. The casein forms the gloppy solid that is filtered from the liquid. Baking soda (a base) is then added to neutralize the acid and change the protein back into a shape that is more fluid. This becomes the glue. Water can be added to give the glue whatever consistency you would like.

Separating Dyes in Water

Sometimes, people want to know what is in a mixture. Scientists use a process called chromatography (kroh-muh-tog-ruh-fee) to separate different parts of a mixture. Dots of the mixtures—different colors of washable markers—are placed on a piece of coffee filter paper. The end of the paper is put into water. As the water moves up the filter paper, it carries the dye from the marker. Different dyes move up the paper at different rates and become separated. While this may sound very complicated, it’s actually an easy process to do at home.

Materials

Paper cups
Coffee Filters (cone type)
Water-soluble markers (marked washable)
Pencil
Binder clip

Procedure

1. Put a small amount of water in the bottom of a paper cup. The water should come up about one quarter inch from the bottom of the cup.

2. Cut the coffee filter paper into rectangles approximately one half inch wide by four inches long.

3. Place a small spot of marker approximately one half inch from the bottom of the paper. The spot should be above the level of the water in the cup.

4. Use a binder clip to attach the filter paper to a pencil, so that the top of the paper is attached to pencil and the bottom hangs free.

5. Place the pencil across the top of the glass so the bottom of the paper is immersed in the water. Be sure that the spot of marker is above the level of the water and that the paper doesn’t touch the sides of the cup.

6. Watch as the water moves up the paper. The spot of color will start to move up the paper as well. If the marker is a mixture of dyes, the different colors will start to separate.

Things to think about

Did the colors separate the way you expected?

Which colors separated the most? The least?

If you have several different sets of markers, try different shades of one color (greens and purples work well). Do the shades separate with the same pattern?

Watching an Enzyme Work

Plants and people need lots of chemistry to live! Our bodies are chemical plants using food and oxygen in chemical reactions to do all the wonderful things we do every day. Our bodies use special molecules, called enzymes to make these reactions go smoothly and quickly.

Catalase is a common enzyme. It helps change peroxides (which are created in other reactions and aren’t good for living things) into water and oxygen. It does this very quickly. Most living tissue contains catalase. We can use potatoes to help see catalase work because bubbles of oxygen form when we put potatoes into hydrogen peroxide. We can also see how to stop enzymes from working.

When potatoes are cooked, the structure of the enzyme changes and it doesn’t work. Cooked potatoes won’t make bubbles of oxygen. Even though catalase is present in living things, the amount may vary. Apples contain very little catalase . Putting apples in peroxide causes only a few bubbles to form.

Materials
Hydrogen Peroxide (available in the first aid section of most pharmacies or supermarkets)
Potatoes
Apples
Plastic cups
A small pot (for cooking some of the potato)

1) Label the cups: a. Hydrogen peroxide plus raw potato b. Water plus raw potato c. Hydrogen peroxide plus cooked potato d. Hydrogen peroxide plus apple
2) Cut small pieces of potato. Leave some raw. Boil some pieces for 5-10 minutes (until they are soft)
3) Cut small pieces of apple.
4) Put a small amount of hydrogen peroxide or water (as labeled) into each cup.
5) Add raw potato to the cup with hydrogen peroxide and the cup with water. What happens in each cup?
6) Add cooked potato to the cup with hydrogen peroxide. Does it behave like the raw potato?
7) Add the apple to the hydrogen peroxide. Do you see any bubbles? Look carefully, especially around the apple pieces.
8) Try this! Put other fruits or vegetables into the peroxide (try carrots, mushrooms, grapes or zucchini). Which ones make lots of bubbles?

Crystal Snowflakes

Last month I explained how to grow sugar crystals to make candy. This month, we are also going to grow crystals only we are going to make them look like snowflakes. Snowflakes are crystals of water. Since water needs to be kept cold to stay solid, you can’t really use water crystals to make things to keep inside.

You need to use other compounds, which are solid at room temperature (like sugar) to make things to keep. For this experiment, we are going to use borax. You can find borax in the laundry aisle of many supermarkets. One brand names is 20 Mule Team. Caution: This experiment uses boiling water which is very hot. Please be sure to have a responsible adult supervising. Also, be sure to wash your hands after working with borax and keep the snowflakes away from small children or pets that might try to eat them!

Materials:

1 cup boiling water
2-3 tablespoons borax
Shallow pan or jar
Pipe cleaners

1) Create your borax solution. Boil one cup of water. Little by little, stir the borax into the water (about a half tablespoon at a time). Keep stirring until no more borax will dissolve.

2) Create your snowflake form. Cut a pipe cleaner into three pieces and twist them together in the middle. If you want to grow your snowflake in a jar, make one piece longer so you can attach it to a pencil and hang it into the jar.

3) Put your snowflake form(s) into the jar or pan. Pour the borax solution on top. Put them in a place where you can check on them daily.

4) When your snowflakes have grown, take them out and let them dry. If you hang them near a sunny window, they will sparkle!

Things to Think About and Do

- Look at the crystals with a magnifying glass. Compare them to the borax powder you started with... do they look similar or different?
- Can you grow other kinds of snowflakes? You can try this same experiment with sugar, table salt or Epsom salts. Which grows the biggest snowflakes?

Growing Sugar Crystals

This is not an experiment—because you can eat the results. This is a cooking project which shows how science is part of our lives—even candy! Sugar is a solid. Each little grain or crystal of sugar is made up of lots of individual sugar molecules. The molecules are arranged in a very orderly fashion that gives sugar its shape. Rock candy is made of sugar crystals. The crystals grow bigger than the ones you find in a packet of sugar or the sugar you buy to make cookies. They’re easy to grow—just give it a try! Caution: The sugar/water solution is extremely hot. Please take care when mixing and pouring it.

Materials:
Remember—you’re going to eat the results—don’t use anything that you wouldn’t use for food preparation)
3 cups sugar
1 cup water
Heavy saucepan
Clean jars or tall glasses
Clean string, straw or popsicle stick

1) Get your crystal growing apparatus ready. You need to suspend your string into the container without it touching the sides or bottom. If you are using a string, you can tie it to a pencil and then lay the pencil across the top of the jar like shown in this image.

Wet your string and dip it into sugar so that a few crystals cling to the string. This will give your candy a place to start growing.

2) Put three cups of sugar in the pan and add 1 cup of water. It will seem like there is too much sugar/not enough water, but it will be ok! Put the pan on the stove and heat the sugar/water solution. Stir it gently. As the solution heats up, more and more sugar will dissolve. The solution will look cloudy. You want to heat it until the solution turns clear and starts to bubble. Be Very Careful—the solution is very hot. Let it cool for 5-10 minutes before proceeding.

3) Pour the solution into the jars. Be sure the string is not touching the sides or bottom. Growing crystals takes time because the crystals grow as the water evaporates. Cover the top with a paper towel or coffee filter to prevent dust from getting into the jar. Put the jar some place where it won’t be disturbed.

4) Check on your crystals every day. If a crust of crystals forms across the top of the jar, just remove it with a fork or spoon so water can continue to evaporate. If crystals form on the sides/bottom of the jar, pour the solution into a clean jar and place the string into the clean jar.

5) When your candy is big enough, you can take it out and eat it. If you want to save it, just let it dry and then store it in a closed container. It won’t spoil, but if you leave it out, it may attract bugs! Enjoy!

Fun With Ice

Here’s a magic trick you can do to amaze your friends! You can lift an ice cube without tying any knots! Unlike most magic tricks, which use illusions, this one uses science.

Magic Trick Materials

String
Ice cube
Salt (in a shaker works best)

1) Put the ice cube on a plate. Put a little bit of water on top of it.

2) Cut a piece of string (about 6 inches long). Put one end of the string in the water on the ice cube. Show everyone that the string is not attached to the ice cube.

3) Sprinkle a little salt on top of the ice cube. If you want to be mysterious, you can tell everyone that it is magic powder. If you want to be scientific, you can explain that the salt will melt a little bit of the ice so the string sinks into the cube. Then the coldness of the cube will refreeze the water around the string.

4) Wait a minute or so (it’s a good idea to practice this beforehand, so you know how long it will take). You will probably be able to see the string sink into the ice a little bit.

5) Once you feel confident the string is in the cube, pick it up and amaze your friends!

Why does this work? (And another experiment to try)

Almost everyone knows that water freezes (or melts) at 32oF (0oC). That’s a physical constant, which means that under normal conditions, water always freezes or melts at this temperature. But, we can do something to change the melting point of water. In the winter ice forms on roads and sidewalks, making travel slippery and dangerous. When the temperature is below 32oF (0oC), ice will not melt by itself. To make it melt, people put salt on the ice. Adding salt to the ice lowers the freezing point of the ice (now an ice-salt mixture).

You can see this for yourself, with this easy experiment.

Materials for observing the change in freezing point:

Insulated cup (Styrofoam or double walled travel mug—a regular cup will work, just not as well)
Water
Ice
Salt
Thermometer (Be sure you have one that can read temperatures below freezing!)

1) Fill your glass, about 2/3 full, with ice. Add cold water, leaving some room at the top (so you can stir the solution).

2) Wait a few minutes (keep stirring gently) and then measure the temperature. It should be 32oF(0oC). If it is not, you may need to either wait a little longer or add more ice.

3) Add salt to the ice/water solution. You will need to add a lot (1/4 to 1/2 cup, or more, depending on the size of your cup). You want the solution to be very salty.

4) Wait a few minutes and measure the temperature again. How low did it go?

5) If the temperature of the solution only went down a few degrees, add more salt and measure again!

Jesus Blesses the Children Kid's Story

Narrator: Did you know that Jesus loves children? Let's meet a family who brought their children to see Jesus.

Narrator:

In a small house in a small town in Galilee, a Jewish family was eating dinner together.

(Family dinner sounds)

Father:

I heard some interesting news today. The Teacher, the Man they call Jesus, is traveling through this area, not far from here.

Mother:

Oh, I have heard so many stories about Him. He healed a blind beggar man and a man who could not walk. He even raised a little girl from the dead.

Father:

Yes, I have heard these stories too. But, I have also heard that He is a teacher and tells stories about the kingdom of God. I would love to hear Him talk.

Mother:

So would I. Should we go to see tomorrow? We can walk and take some food with us.

Father:

What about our children?

Mother:

Actually, I was hoping that we could bring our children with and that Jesus would bless them?

Father:

That is a wonderful idea. Let's do it. Let's take our children and go to see Jesus tomorrow. We will listen to His stories and watch as He heals people. We will also ask Jesus to bless our children and ask God to look upon our children with kindness.

Narrator:

The next day the family packed up and set out to meet Jesus.

(Sounds of people walking and greeting each other)

Mother:

Oh my, it looks like we are not the only ones from our village going to see Jesus.

Father:

Yes, half of our village seems to be walking with us.

Neighbor:

I see you've brought all of your children. We also have our children with us so that they may be blessed by Jesus.

Mother:

I can see Jesus up ahead. I cannot believe how excited I am. Oh, children, can you see Jesus?

(Sounds of people seeing Jesus up ahead.)

Father:

Oh, excuse me, you are one of Jesus' disciples, aren't you?

Disciple #1:

Yes, I'm helping Jesus. Jesus is here to preach about the kingdom of God. Wait, where are you going with all of those children? Why did you bring babies out here?

Father:

We have brought our children with us so that we may ask Jesus to place His hands on them. We want Jesus to ask God to watch out for them.

Disciple #2:

No, our Master has so much work to do. So many people are coming, asking things of Him. We need to protect Him so that he does not wear Himself out. Our master Jesus has no time for babies. Take these children home. Now, go!

(Sounds of crowd murmuring)

Father:

Please, we have come all this way for our children's sake. We only want Jesus to bless them. Please do not turn us away.

Disciple #1:

He has no time for little ones. Take your children home.

(Crowd hushes)

Narrator:

When Jesus saw what the disciples were doing He said:

Jesus:

Let all of the little children come to Me. Don't keep them away. God's kingdom belongs to people like them. Anyone who will not receive God's kingdom like a little child will never enter it.

(Music transition)

Narrator:

Jesus took the time to touch every single baby and child that had been brought to him. He blessed all of the children by telling them of the great love God has for them.

Jairus's Daughter Kid's Story

Narrator: Have you ever been so desperate that you just didn't know what to do? Meet Jairus, a very worried father.

(Crowd sounds)

Jairus:

Excuse me, Sir. Jesus, please help me. I need your help for my daughter.

Jesus:

Who are you?

Jairus:

My name is Jairus. I am a synagogue ruler. I have only one daughter, and she is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and will live. Please come, Jesus.

Jesus:

All right, I will come with you.

Jairus:

Thank you. Come, I will show you the way.

(Crowd noises)

Narrator:

But Jairus's daughter wasn't the only one who needed healing.

Woman:

That's Him. That's Jesus in the crowd of people. I have been bleeding for twelve long miserable years. I have spent all of my money, and no doctor has been able to heal me. Perhaps if I just quietly touch His robe, Jesus will be able to heal me. I will try.

(Crowd sounds)

Woman:

Oh, oh my. I can feel it. The bleeding has stopped. I am healed!

Jesus:

Wait, who just touched me?

Disciples:

Who touched you? Jesus, you see the people crowding against you. How can you ask, 'Who touched me?'

Jesus:

I want to know who touched me.

Narrator:

Jesus kept looking around at the crowd. He waited to see who had touched Him. Then the woman came forward and fell at His feet.

Woman:

I am so afraid, but I will tell you the truth. I touched your robe because I was so sick and no one could heal me. I thought that if I touched your robe, your power would heal me.

Jesus:

Dear woman, your faith has healed you. Go in peace. You are free from your suffering.

(Crowd noise)

Servants:

Excuse us, we are looking for Jairus.

Jairus:

Here I am.

Servants:

Sir, your daughter has died. Why bother Jesus anymore?

Jesus:

Do not listen to them. Don't be afraid, Jairus, just believe. We will go to your house.

(Sounds of crying)

Jesus:

Why are you all sobbing? The child is not dead. She is only sleeping.

(Sounds of laughing, crying, disbelief)

Jesus:

Everyone must go outside. Only the child's mother and father will come with me.

Narrator:

Then Jesus, the girl's parents, and several of the disciples went into the dead girl's room. Jesus took the girl's hand.

Jesus:

Little girl, I say to you, get up!

Narrator:

Right away the girl stood up and walked around. Everyone was amazed.

Jesus:

Give her something to eat! And don't tell anyone what happened here today.

(Music transition)

Narrator:

Jesus used his power to heal people. Absolutely nothing is too hard for Jesus to heal.

Jesus told stories to everyone. Even experts in the Jewish law needed help understanding the Kingdom of God.

Law Expert:

Jesus, what must I do to receive eternal life?

Jesus:

You are the expert of Jewish law. What does the Law say? How do you understand it?

Law Expert:

The law says to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength and with all your mind. And the law says to love your neighbor as you love yourself.

Jesus:

Yes, you have answered correctly. Do that, and you will live.

Narrator:

But the man wanted to make himself look good to Jesus. So he asked . .

Law Expert:

But, Jesus, who is my neighbor?

Jesus:

I will tell you a story to show you who your neighbor is.

(Story music transition)

Jesus:

A Jewish man was walking down from Jerusalem to Jericho. Suddenly, he heard a noise.

(Sounds of feet approaching)

Robbers:

Quick, here's someone coming that we can attack. He's a Jewish man. Let's beat him up! His clothes are nice, so let's take them. Check for any money. It's all ours

Jesus:

The robbers beat the Jewish man, took all of his belongings, including his clothes, and left him to die on the side of the road.

A priest happened to be going down that same road.

Jewish Man:

Help me. Please help me.

Priest:

(to himself) Oh my, that poor man lying in the road. Is he dead? If I touch a dead man, I will be unclean. I will walk on the other side of the road.

Jesus:

A Levite, a man who took care of the temple, also came by.

Jewish Man:

Help me. Please, someone help me.

Levite:

(to himself) Oh no, look at that man. He's all bloody and bruised. I wonder what happened to him, but I don't want to get my clothes all bloody. Yuck. I will walk on the other side of the road.

Jesus:

Then a Samaritan man came down the road. Jews hated Samaritans and would have nothing to do with them. The Samaritans also hated the Jews fiercely.

Jewish Man:

Help me. Help me

Samaritan Man:

(to himself) Oh, oh no. This poor man has been beaten and robbed. This is terrible. He might die. I can't just leave him here in the road to die. I must do something.

(to the Jewish man) Sir, don't you worry. I'll take care of you. Let me first put some oil on your wounds. Then I will bandage you all up and take you to an inn where you can rest and get well.

Jesus:

So the Samaritan bandaged the wounded man, put him on his own donkey, and took him to a nearby inn.

Samaritan Man:

Excuse me, innkeeper. Here are two silver coins. Take care of this man. I must go on, but when I return, I will pay you back for any extra expenses you may have for taking care of this man.

(Story music transition)

Narrator:

When Jesus finished the story He asked . .

Jesus:

Well, expert of the law, which of the three men do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by robbers?

Law Expert:

The one who felt sorry for him and stopped to take care of him.

Jesus:

You are correct. Go and do as he did.

Narrator:	A great crowd of people followed Jesus because they've seen Him heal many sick people. One day it was getting late and the people were getting hungry.
Jesus:	Disciples, look at this great crowd of people. Where can we buy bread for all these people to eat?
Disciple #1:	Jesus, eight month's pay would not buy enough for everyone here to have just one bite of bread. (Crowd noises)
Disciple #2:	(shouting to crowd) Does anyone have any food with them?
Boy:	I do, sir. I brought some food with me. It's not much, just five small loaves of barley bread and two small fish, but you may have it.
Disciple #1:	Little boy, thank you. Come with us and we will show Jesus what you have. (Crowd noises)
Disciple #2:	Jesus, here is a boy with five small loaves of barley bread. He also has two small fish. But, how far will that go in such a large crowd? There are more than 5000 people here. What should we do?
Jesus:	Tell all of the people sit down. (Crowd noises, disciples telling people to sit)
Jesus:	Thank You, Father in heaven, for giving to us these loaves of barley bread. Thank You also for these fish. Let all of the people here eat and be nourished from the food that You have provided. Let them see Your glory.
Narrator:	Then Jesus' disciples gave the food to the crowd. The five loaves and two fish fed everyone! (Sounds of passing food and encouraging people to eat)
Jesus:	Has everyone had enough to eat?
Disciples:	Yes, Jesus, every single person in this huge crowd has had enough to eat.
Jesus:	Then take some baskets and collect the leftovers. Let nothing be wasted.
Narrator:	So Jesus' disciples picked up all the food that was left.
Disciples:	Look, Jesus, we have collected twelve baskets full of leftover pieces of bread and fish.
Jesus:	I am the Bread of Life. Anyone who comes to me will never go hungry, and anyone who believes in me will never be thirsty.
Narrator:	The crowd was amazed at this miracle and thought that Jesus was a prophet sent by God. The little boy learned that even the smallest gift given to Jesus can bring great results. Here is the truth

God is perfect, holy, righteous - anyway you say it, it means the same. He is totally good. Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true (Psalm 119:142).

People are imperfect, unholy and unrighteous - anyway you say it, it means the same. We are totally bad. Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God's glory (Romans 3:23). That means that we (imperfect people) are separated (apart) from a perfect God. No good thing that we do can help us get across that separation. The Bible tells us that, "When you sin, the pay you get is death. But God gives you the gift of eternal life because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done (Romans 6:23)."

Sometimes we think sins are BIG things like murder or bank robbery. We don't understand that lying, or cheating or being mean to your brother or sister are also sins. We don't understand that disobeying your parents or whining and complaining are sins. That is why God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ to earth. That is why Christ died on the cross - so He could pay the price for our sin and we no longer have to be separated from God. Christ has paid the price for you (1 Corinthians 6:20). But the Lord Jesus Christ did not stay dead. Three days later He came alive. … Here is what it is. Christ died for our sins, just as the Bible said He would. He was buried. He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Bible said He would be (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

He is now in heaven preparing a place for those who know Him as Savior. "There are many rooms in my Father's house. If this were not true, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you (John 14:2).

Do you understand that you are a sinner and separated from God? Do you understand that you need someone to take care of your sin problem? If you understand that you are a sinner and that you need a Savior, then you need to tell God that you are ready to receive His wonderful gift and to become a follower of Jesus.

Salvation from sin and eternal life are God's gifts to you. God's grace has saved you because of your faith in Christ. Your salvation doesn't come from anything you do. It is God's gift. It is not based on anything you have done. No one can brag about earning it (Ephesians 2:8-9).

They're both ways people try to get to heaven.

See, sometimes people think you get to heaven by doing nice things for others. (Doing nice things for others is good, but it's not what gets you to heaven.) Sometimes people think you get to heaven by "looking good," attending church and giving money to poor people. No, that doesn't do it either.
